HARRY (not Henry) JOSEPH ALLSOP was my Grandfather. {As a young man he Went to Ceylon for several years working in TEA planting etc. Sailed on SS. NARKUNDA from London Docks (I have photo) and on one trip coming back c. 1912 he met a “Ladies Companion”, my grandmother, ELLEN RUTH WESTON (Nellie). She became pregnant, probably onboard the ship, and my mother, HELEN MARY (Molly) ALLSOP was born on 23 July 1913. All three then sailed back to Ceylon. My mother, Molly, did not return to UK until about 1924. She knew little of WW1. Nellie’s parents lived in The Gate House of GREAT MAYTHAM, Rolvenden, Kent where he was a Gardener (very important then). I think that’s why Harry and Nelly came to Rolvenden. Google Great Maytham and you’ll see it was a huge Mansion. It is now Apartments. I have happy memories of my great grandmother, LEILA RUTH WESTON nee WELCH. As a child I called her “Granny” and Neillie I called “Gant”, then or course I had my Dad’s parents and I called them Grandma and Grandad Whyman. So, I had three grandmothers during WW2, two of whom had animals and farm fruits. My little brother, John, and I were very fortunate. When they came back from Ceylon, HARRY then became ?owner? or THE BULL HOTEL, ROLVENDEN, KENT. I’ll send a photo separately of that. They were there for a few years then moved into East House where a Telephone Exchange had been installed with a Post Office and Mail sorting Office . My mother was one of the “operators” on that PBX Exchange. My Mum also became pregnant and she and my Dad married in June 1938, Gant did NOT come to the Wedding (was it because Molly was pregnant?????). I was born in November 1938 but they NEVER disclosed their 1938 Wedding Anniversary and I found details after they had both died. I was born in that house on November 2nd 1938. Shall send photos of it as it is in 2021. In the 1930s telephones became “Automatic” so the Exchange went to a local building. The Post Office and Mail sorting office moved across the High Street and Grandad sold “Medical supplies” though he was not a pharmacist. I’ll send photos separately to you Dennis.
