THE LATE PTE. FREDERICK ALSOP.
Mrs. Alsop, of Fairview, Winchelsea, has received these letters from officers concerning the death of her son Frederick, killed in action : :—
Dear Mrs, and Mr. Alsop,—
Allow me to express my deepest svmpathy with you in your very sad bereavement. Your boy was a splendid soldier and a clean living one, and we feel his loss deeply. Your one consolation must be that he died, as all soldiers like to go, swiftly, doing his duty, which I can say he always did smil-ingly and courageously. Arrangements have been made to place a cross over his grave. Your other boy, Bert, is rather cut up, but we are giving him a rest out of the line, and he is fast becoming his old-self. You may be assured we will see that he is well looked after. Mr. Myers has him under him. He is an old officer, and under-stands.—I am, yours sincerely,
H. J. SYKES (Capt.). 24th A.M.G. Co. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Alsop,—
It is my painful duty to inform you of
the death of your dear son, Frederick.
On the night of the 17th October, at 11 p.m., we were holding the line in a sector which had just previously been won, and your son, together with two other boys, were killed instantaneously by a shell falling on the dugout which they occupied. I must ex-press my deepest, sympathy, as a more pleas-ant boy I could not have had in my sec-tion. He was liked by all who came in touch with him. I buried him just beside the cemetery, and a short burial service, was read over him,was conducted by myself. I have made arrangements to have a cross put on his grave before our unit leaves the line. Your other boy is greatly upset, and is looking after Freddie's per-sonal kit, which he has sent to England. I can assure you I will look after your other boy, and watch in his interest. Any fur-ther information I will onlv be too pleased to send vou. Kindly accept my deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement.—
I remain yours
Sincerely.
P. MYERS (Lieut.). 20/10/17.
