OBITUARY. MR SPENCE ALSOP. Well-Known Butcher and Farmer.
The death occurred on Saturday evening of Spence Alsop, butcher, New Market, Aberdeen. A week ago he caught a chill, and, his heart being in weakened state, he passed away suddenly his residence, Glasgoego House, Kinellar. For many years Mr Alsop had been a familiar and prominent figure in the county cattle trade, and was one of the biggest buyers in the north-east. Rising from humble position, he established himself as one of the leaders in his line of business, and a capable man of affairs who showed integrity and straight dealing towards others. To his large and flourishing butcher's business in the Market hall, he added that of farmer, purchasing, many years ago, the fine farm of Wogle, Kinellar, which lie cultivated in accordance with the best principles of farming, and where he carried on successful horse and cattle-rearing business. Mr Alsop was a man of many good qualities, and was much liked by a large circle of intimate friends. Though taking no part in public affairs, he was greatly interested in local matters, and gave willing help to many a good cause. Mr Alsop took particularly keen interest in the district Agricultural Association, and was stalwart supporter and prominent exhibitor, chiefly of cross-bred cattle and Clydesdale horses, at the Blackburn annual show. He was a J.P of the City of Aberdeen, and an active member of the Parish Church of Kinellar. Mr Alsop was a director of Messrs Middleton's Belmont Auction Mart, Aberdeen, and of the Aberdeen Hide, Skin, and Tallow Market Co., Ltd., Aberdeen. He leaves a widow, a son (Mr Spence Alsop, jun)., who succeeds him in business), and married daughter. A brother is Mr John Alsop, cattle dealer, Inverurie.
